The chaos and unconditional love that comes with toddlers for example. The laughter and the tickle of your kiddos small fingers. Kids want to be cuddled, they want to run around or get thrown up in the air. They don’t want to sit still and smile at the camera. Be prepared ahead of your session
Sounds simple but if you know what’s coming it is easier to relax. These simple things can help make it easier for you. This way you have more time to have fun with your family.
- Check out ahead of time how long it takes to get to your photo location. Plan in some extra time.
- Bring an extra outfit for everyone. You never know!
- And bring some snacks. Some non-messy snacks for in between your session or a bribe for after.
Movement
Somehow moving around makes everyone relax. It takes your mind off the fact that you’re being photographed. And you’re automatically more relaxed and at ease. It’s also often difficult for young kids to sit still so it helps funnel their energy. If kids are allowed to just be themselves everything else just falls into place. If they love to run then lets turn it into a game and have fun together. Maybe your kids love to dance. We can put on their favorite playlist and have them twirl to the music. This will create some fun interactive family photos.
Go with the flow
Your photo session is not the time to enforce strict rules. Enjoy being silly with your kids and just go to where their imagination takes you. Be in the moment with them. Just appreciate the fact that you get to spend time together as a family today. If they have a hard time warming up allow them to cling to you. Those make for some super sweet photos. During the course of the session the energy changes and cuddly turns into silly or the other way around.
Get all the different combinations
Another way to give everyone a little break in between your session is that I make sure to not only get the entire family in a picture but to also take every possible combination. On the one hand that means that everyone at some point gets a little break. And on the other hand everyone gets a little special attention.
Be prepared to get silly
One of the joys of being a kid is that you get to be silly and it is totally OK. So be silly together with your kids. Enjoy this stage and time of your lives. Before you know it your kiddos will be all grown up.
