There are so many choices when it comes to family photographers. So how do you choose? How do you know which one is right for you? Let me help you a bit. Here are 5 things to ask yourself before hiring a family photographer in New Jersey.

What is your budget?

I think this is the first question you need to answer yourself. There is a photographer out there for every budget. So you need to make sure that what you like will also work for your budget. It is important to factor that budget into the frequency of your photo sessions. Do you prefer to have multiple sessions a year, but only get a few pictures from each? Or do you just want one special annual session? Or maybe a big session only every other year and mini sessions in between? Whatever your needs are you should look at it as a whole and budget accordingly.

What type of photography do you want?

I guess that means what vision do you have for your session. Which location do you see yourself in. Do you want an in home session? Something urban? Or more nature? Are you looking for more posed photos or more natural? Make sure that the photographer has what you want as part of their portfolio.

What kind of experience are you looking for?

The services that photographers provide also vary greatly. Some offer an all inclusive package, others do in person sales. Some include styling services or props. Make sure you ask all these questions before so that you and the photographer are on the same page.

Do you like the photographers vibe?

Choosing a photographer is something very personal. You let this person capture your true family emotions. So you need to be on the same wavelength as them. You need to feel comfortable around this person. It is not easy to gauge that without actually meeting. But you can get a little glimpse on the photographer’s about page and maybe even a better insight on their Instagram account. Many share more personal items there.

Do you like their portfolio?

This is an easy one. But make sure you don’t just like 1 or 2 images. Make sure that the portfolio as a whole speaks to you. Not necessarily each and every image. But definitely the majority of them.
