Welcoming a baby into your family is very special. It will change everything forever. So, what better way to remember this event than a photo session that truly represents your new family. No matter if this is your first, second, third… baby. But how do you know what’s right for you? Let me show you how amazing an in-home newborn photo session will be and see if it is the right fit for you.
1 Easy on you and baby – newborn photos in the comfort of your home
The best part about an in-home photo session is that you don’t have to go anywhere. The photographer comes to you. You don’t need to worry about the gazillion things you might need to pack when leaving the house with a newborn. No worries about how to feed, change diapers or how many changes of clothes to bring just in case. Because all you need is right there. You just need to be home and relax in the comfort of your home.
In addition to that everyone can be themselves and nobody needs to adjust to any new environment. This goes for yourself, your newborn and any older siblings. New things can be tough especially for kids no matter how old they are. So why stress about it. Your home is your comfort place so why take everyone away from it just for photos. Stay in the comfort of your home and invite the photographer to you for a relaxed newborn photo session.
2 Personal touch to newborn pictures – your home adds to the story
In addition to your home being your comfort space it is also your personal space. It carries your memories and your style. It adds a special personal touch to your newborn pictures. The planning that you put into the nursery can be included in your newborn photos. But don’t worry if you didn’t get there yet. Any space in your home will provide a personal touch. It can be as simple as the pattern of your bedsheets or a blanket on your couch. When looking back at your newborn photos it will not only show your new family but also include memories for your kids on how their home looked like when they were born.

3 Natural posing feels more authentic
We already talked about the environment of your in-home newborn photos to be true to you, so it is only natural that the posing follows the same logic. Why try and photograph your baby in a way that doesn’t represent the way they usually sleep. Newborns just want to eat and sleep sometimes even both at the same time and they want to be held and snuggled. So, what better way to remember this fleeting newborn stage as some naturally posed newborn photos holding baby in your arms or swaddling baby in your favorite blanket and laying them down in your bed or their crib.
4 baby led photos – flexible schedule
Getting to know your baby should be the most important part in the first few weeks and month after baby’s arrival. As much as we would want them to, newborns often don’t have a set schedule of when they want to be fed or sleep. With an in-home newborn photo session, you don’t have to worry about anybody else’s schedule. Your baby will lead the way. If they need to be fed, changed or are fuzzy and want to sleep than you can just take care of your babies needs without worrying of intruding on some else’s time frame. A good newborn photographer will schedule between 1-2 hours for your newborn session to make sure your babies needs can be the number 1 priority.

5 easy to include older siblings
Newborn photos aren’t just about your new baby. They are also about your family. They are about you becoming parents or your firstborn becoming an older sibling. That means everyone gets to be in the pictures. And everyone gets their turn and special attention. This is especially important if there are older siblings. It can be hard for them adjusting to not being the baby anymore. But it is way easier to make them feel comfortable in your home. They will get their special time with the baby and if they don’t want anything to do with the photo session anymore, they can just go play or have a snack. No need to keep them confined in a studio space where they don’t have a comfort zone.
6 furry friends welcome
Do you have a pet? They are part of your family, too. Let’s include them in your newborn photos. No reason on why they shouldn’t be part of the photo memories as well. If you have a pet then most likely the pet feels like part of the family. But having them participate in an entire photo session can be a bit much. It is easier at home. Your furry friends can just be included for a few pictures.

7 no props needed
What do you want to remember about this newborn phase? How they looked sleeping swaddled in some basket or on some random fur that isn’t even your own? Or how it felt holding their tiny body in your arms? How it felt having their head rest against your chest and just breath in this little wonder? If there is a blanket that is special to you it should be included in your newborn photos. But the important part is that it is special to you and adds to the story of your newborn photos. If you’re looking for great swaddle blankets these are my favorites. They have tons of designs to choose from so you can pick one that matches your personal style. And they are large enough to make swaddling your baby easy.
8 you don’t need to stress about your home – it is perfect just the way it is
Maybe you’re worried that your home isn’t worth photographing. Maybe it is a bit more messy than usual because a tidy home wasn’t a priority in recent weeks. But it is your space. This is the home where you are welcoming your little baby. It deserves to be part of the story. Share your specific concerns with your photographer. Not every room needs to be part of the story. It is usually enough to find one or two rooms with good light. And a good photographer will usually help set up and declutter the areas that they think will be best to help tell your personal story.

9 no worrying about germs and taking your baby out of your home
Once you bring a newborn to your home you are very aware of all the potential dangers to their well-being. One of them being germs. Different cultures have different traditions on how long to shield them from exposure in the outside world. So why would you want to bring a newborn to a photo studio when the photographer can come to your home? If you want to be extra careful you can ask your photographer to wear a mask. There is nothing strange about it these days.
10 timing for in-home newborn photos is more flexible – awake vs sleepy baby
By now it should be clear that the goal for in-home newborn sessions is to document this current stage of your family for you as personal as possible. There is no exclusively right time for newborn photos. As a rule of thumb if you schedule your newborn photos with a younger baby, you will get more sleepy baby photos. If you wait a few weeks or months, you’ll have a more awake baby. You’ll get some eye contact and maybe even a smile. Any of those moments are precious. There is not one that is better than the other. So, it is best to not feel pressured into booking a newborn session as soon as possible. The most important part about the first few weeks should be to get to know your newborn and for mom and baby to recover from birth.
