Why would I want your kids to misbehave at the photo session? Well I want you to let go of the thought that they need to behave. Let go of the thought that there is any right or wrong behavior for a lifestyle photo session. What do I mean?
Somehow parents stress a lot about how their kids might behave during a photo session. When the kids are younger they think that maybe they’ll be cranky because the session isn’t at the kids ideal time of day. Maybe because it interferes with the nap schedule. When they’re older the parents think that the kids need to be still and just smile at the camera. But that is not what a lifestyle photo session is about. I want to capture your family the way family life is. Nobody needs to smile at the camera unless they want to. Family life can be messy. So why pretend it is styled and clean. I want you and your kids to relax and be themselves.
Something all parents need to remember is that your kids are adorable! No matter what their behavior is. Even when they’re cranky. They’re still adorable. Even when they run away, make silly faces or don’t listen to what you’re saying. They’re authentic and adorable.
When I cull through images after a session I usually have to discard images of parents frowning or scolding or looking otherwise not adorable because they are trying to get their kid to do something that the kid doesn’t want to listen to. I never have to discard images of kids faces because they don’t look adorable.
So embrace the chaos of family life. Let your kids misbehave at the photo session. Let go of the notion that things need to be perfect. Enjoy the photo session time and the fact that you don’t need to enforce every little rule that your kid might be breaking. Just live in the moment and enjoy being with each other. This will be the basis for your best family photos.
